Just to keep things under perspective...

What, not a single one in former Portuguese Africa? How could the Pentagon slip up like that?

We were good colonizers. We taught those peoples who they could trust and who they couldn't... :D

It's called self-determination. Something which is denied to Crimeans and Cubans - and Europeans, by the way... -, among others...

Well, I seem to recall that in each of your three African colonies they had to wage years of insurgency warfare fighting the Portuguese military - which probably helped Portuguese public opinion "see the light" by the time of your revolutionary upheaval in 1974. :D

Indeed Putin seems to be more and more of a throwback.

Expansion for expansions sake is what bankrupted the European colonial powers and it will do the same for Russia.
Colonialism didn't bankrupt European colonial powers. Colonies were dropped when colonial powers realized they could milk them without having the expense of running them. That's where the expression neo-colonialism comes from... I lived for a year in the Ivory Coast and everything worth having was in French hands, with France only having the expense of keeping a regiment of the Foreign Legion near Abidjan...
Not "Colonialism", "Expansion for expansions sake".
