Well, heck, we all knew the Saudis have plentiful sunlight. And, for that matter, plenty of fossil fuel reserves. But when are they gonna start to exploit their vast sand reserves? Or, for that matter, their sea salt reserves? Wouldn't want the Saudi royal family to run low on riyals now, would we?

The KSA has enough money to go completely renewable. Of course it has a long track record of white elephant projects.

Nobody is more surprised than me that solar has become competitive.

Same here!

To illustrate: energy policy out here has become a political hot potato. Traditionally, most electric power in Oz has been generated in our two most populous states to satisfy demand there from coal. New South Wales is rich in black coal and Victoria in brown coal. In recent years we have experienced rising electric power costs way beyond the rise in our cost of living. Our Prime Minister, to avert a looming power shortage, tried to strongarm the electric power companies into building a new coal fired thermal power station in NSW to tide the state over until the early 2030's. The power companies refused to do so point blank. Instead they are investing in solar panel farms and other renewables (such as pumped hydro) on an unprecedented scale.

When the hard headed CEO's of electric power companies in a country like mine with allegedly the worlds cheapest (and high quality) black thermal coal find it more commercially attractive to invest in renewables in preference to fossil fuels, you can rest assured that the age of renewables has arrived.

(p.s. as the world's most sunlit continent Australia, sort of, resembles an enlarged version of Saudi Arabia without the oil. :D )

"For the UAE, are renewables the new oil?"

Not to be outdone by the Saudis, UAE is signing on. It appears that the Arabian peninsula is about to become one vast solar panel installation.

What will they do with all of the electric power?

The linked article has a discussion of economic aspects of the project, which includes this:
". . . the more oil the UAE burns for electricity, the less it has left for exports, a more lucrative business."
