I should remark that the above speculation, borne of a 2003 article by Nick Bostrom, is entirely dependent on the assumption that creating a functional simulation of the human mind is possible.

That assumption is... well, just that. It is nothing obvious, philosophically speaking. Some, like Roger Penrose, have proposed quite strong arguments against that assumption.

There is "nothing obvious, philosphically speaking." Quite true. Kinda like our religions, in that regard . . . Mostly religions are based on assumptions, too, aren't they?
