I think the mockery is mostly in the eye of reporter Victoria Taft, but what I do see is a self-absorption and unawareness that is pushing almost all of public discourse into the Twilight Zone. Would you suppose with me the chief driver of the pro-choice movement is resentment towards men having sexual activity at a lower cost than women? Fixated on autonomy, liberal bioethics forgets its mandate to protect the weak.
At the heart of expressive individualism is the unencumbered self, the atomized individual, shorn of social ties, long on rights but short on duties, always operating at the height of his or her cognitive powers. One’s flourishing consists “in the expression of one’s innermost identity through freely choosing and configuring life in accordance with his or her own distinctive core intuitions, feelings, and preferences.” By privileging the will, this anthropology is forgetful of the body. By extension, it is forgetful of the “lived realities of vulnerability, mutual dependence, and finitude.”
This shift is ominous if you're the unborn baby. We move from definitional viability to will. You may have a heartbeat at eighteen days and be able to suck your thumb, but can you express your values and configure your life to manifest your personality and state your identity. To say, "Here I am"?.......
The expressive individualism implicit in Roe v. Wade was made explicit in the 1992 case Planned Parenthood v. Casey, when, against expectation, the Supreme Court reaffirmed the essential holding of Roe. Central to Justice Kennedy’s opinion was this now-infamous thesis: “At the heart of liberty is the right to define one’s own concept of existence, of meaning, of the universe, and of the mystery of human life.” Snead describes this line as “a paean to liberty of a very particular sort. It is the freedom of the unencumbered atomized will — the self-originating source of valid claims.” And it is from this freedom that the right to an abortion springs.

Snead defines, then builds his case for expressive individualism and afterwards lays out his argument for the ramifications. The Blackmun terminology 'potentiality of human life' is metaphysical dynamite, ultimately rendering the concept of a right to life meaningless and incoherent. You don't have a right to life, you are only lucky to be alive and freedom is only an exercise in power......
