Russia does not disdain seeking friends, extending influence in African "shithole" states.

Post by neverfail » Mon Dec 02, 2019 4:28 am

Trump barely conceals his contempt for Africa.
 (Could the feeling be mutual?)

After referring to some African nations as “shithole countries,” the president struggled to name even some of the major African states. During a speech at the United Nations in 2017, Trump referred to the non-existent African country of “Nambia” … twice.

With the US on the back foot, Russia has taken advantage of the chance to challenge China’s power in Africa.
Now wait a friggin minute. I thought that in Eurasia Russia and China were now such luvvy-dovey bosom buddies. Yet in Africa they are rival diplomatic competitors. How come?

Under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), an ambitious project designed to reorient trade flows from the West to China, Beijing has extended credit and influence across the continent. By financing public infrastructure projects in poorer nations, China has brought several African countries into its economic orbit through debt. This debt-trap diplomacy is compounded by China’s technological dominance. By flooding the continent with cheap smartphones and Chinese applications such as WeChat, Beijing has established itself as a superpower there.

With little focus on technology and infrastructure, Russia extends its influence primarily through military assistance, private mercenaries and the media. According to the Daily Maverick, a South African newspaper, Russia is now the largest supplier of weapons to Africa, having signed military agreements with 21 African states. As well as the military deals and training partnerships with almost half of Africa’s nations, there are the nuclear-energy partnerships with Egypt, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Uganda and Zambia. As South Africa struggles to kickstart its economy, it too could soon fall into the Russian orbit.

In other words, in terms of Africa policy Russia has stepped straight into the shoes of the Soviet Union of yore.

Indeed Putin seems to be more and more of a throwback.

Expansion for expansions sake is what bankrupted the European colonial powers and it will do the same for Russia.

Well, I don't know about that Milo. Russia is reputedly now Africa's biggest arms supplier as well as having mercenary soldiers for hire (one platoon of Cossacks could probably knock over virtually any army in Africa). So presumably Russia is making enough money from such dealings as to make its Africa policy self-funding.

By contrast, the path chosen by the PRC of luring such countries into debt trap borrowings means that China is putting capital of its own at risk. Imagine if these went into serial default on their debts then what could Beijing do about it? Send their marines in a massive exercise in gunboat diplomacy of the type favoured by both of the two Roosevelts : Theodore and Franklin D. alike? Not highly likely!

Well, if so, why doesn't the all-powerful Russian govt dispatch a platoon of their hot-shot Cossacks to eliminate the Muslim primitives raping and killing fellow Africans?

These things have a way of getting out of hand financially, see Vietnam or Afghanistan.

That’s what I was about to say but you beat me to it. Putin, like Xi and the Ayatollahs are chasing past glories.

Empires must be profitable or they don’t last. It looks like Iran is the first to go broke.

Russia is a one trick pony - fossil fuel. Fracking and maybe green energy will undermine the Russian empire.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Namibia

Namibia (/nəˈmɪbiə/] officially the Republic of Namibia, is a country in southern Africa. Its western border is the Atlantic Ocean; it shares land borders with Zambia and Angola to the north, Botswana to the east and South Africa to the south and east.

I would say claiming Nambia does not exist is enough to discount this entire article.

Colonialism didn't bankrupt European colonial powers. Colonies were dropped when colonial powers realized they could milk them without having the expense of running them. That's where the expression neo-colonialism comes from... I lived for a year in the Ivory Coast and everything worth having was in French hands, with France only having the expense of keeping a regiment of the Foreign Legion near Abidjan...

That reads too much like altruism.
