The latest out of Hong Kong is that Carrie Lam has backed down on the legislation;

But "backed down" only implies that she is looking for a more opportune time to reintroduce the same. She has not officially scrapped the plan.

(Same old shit in a different toilet bowl?) :mrgreen:

Remarkable how much a tyranny can fear even a tiny, quasi-democratic constituency.

From a practical point of view, are you sure that "democratic" US respects liberty much better than "tyrannic" China? Can Assange expect to be better treated in the US than he would in China?...

The answer to both questions is "yes". Only a unrepentant Marxist would say otherwise.

So, the Honkers ;) are now finally telling the World that there is a positive side to having been subjected to over a century of British colonial rule in the form of a legacy of respect for civil rights and freedoms protected by rule of law.

You do not truly value something until you have lost it (or at least threatened with the loss) , do you?

Critical Studies majors the world over are no doubt trying their best to ignore this!

Neverfail and Milo,

The twin city states of Singapore and HK have Sino-British parents. Both are successful and rich. Unlike the failures among Britain's ex colonies, there is no need to blame British colonialism. Bums are always blaming others for their own failures. There is thus room for introspection in both countries and this leads to acknowledgement that the colonial past has its good side too.

Leftist University professors see the west as the source of evil. They find it difficult to acknowledge this. It does not fit into the narrative they are indoctrinating their students.

The Honkers :D and Singaporeans are like Aussies and Kiwis. There is a certain amount of affection but also mixed with commercial rivalry.
