It must be remembered that the West Bank was once part of Jordan. At that time, the Palestinians did not ask for Independence from Jordan. It is not statehood that they want. What they want is the destruction of Israel.
A very good point, Cass...

Thanks Sertorio my friend. We rarely agree. So I treasure the occasions when we do. :D

Curiously, Jordan has never demanded the return of the West Bank to its sovereignty either. Why not?

There are enough Palies in Jordan and for the most part they cause turmoil and trouble for the kingdom. Another Million or so are not welcome as Jordan already is on the brink of a revolt.
I'd rather be diving or flying alas for now I am on terra firma.

Well, I have heard that the minority rulers of Jordan (including their Hashemite monarchy) are Bedouin Arabs from the desert whereas the palestinian majority are, by centuries of tradition, farmers and townsmen. The latter I believe get a raw deal from the former. No wonder the West Bank Palestinians do not want to be restored to Jordanian sovereignty any more than the Hashemite rulers want them back.

The Palestinians under Arafat tried to take over the Kingdom in 1970. There were two attempts by Arafat's PLO to assassinate King Hussein of Jordan. The king ordered the army to kill the Palestinians in the Black September War. Husseim's soldiers massacred the Palestinian fighters. They surrendered to the Israelis because they know the Israelis will treat them better than their fellow Arabs and Muslims.

Excerpt from link:
The PLO's strength in Jordan grew, and by the beginning of 1970, groups within the PLO had started to openly call for the overthrow of the Hashemite monarchy. Acting as a state within a state, the fedayeen disregarded local laws and regulations, and even attempted to assassinate King Hussein twice—leading to violent confrontations between them and the Jordanian army in June 1970. Hussein wanted to oust the fedayeen from the country, but hesitated to strike because he did not want his enemies to use it against him by equating Palestinian fighters with civilians. PLO actions in Jordan culminated in the Dawson's Field hijackings incident of 10 September, in which the fedayeen hijacked three civilian aircraft and forced their landing in Zarqa, taking foreign nationals as hostages, and later blowing up the planes in front of international press. Hussein saw this as the last straw, and ordered the army to move.[9]
The Palestinians are troublesome savages. If their fellow Arabs amd fellow Muslims don't want them to be part of their state, why should Israel be expected to take them in, as what the Left wants?

Meanwhile, you should ask a more interesting question. Why didn't the Palestinians ask Jordanian King for Independence of the West Bank. Or ask the Egyptians for independence of Gaza?

Very interesting insight cassowary, and thanks for providing it. I recall that time when the civil war between the Palestinians in Jordan (Arafat's crowd) and the monarchy was big news and not at the time understanding the politics behind it wondered what it was all about.

I disagree with your suggestion that the Palestinians themselves are savages but agree that their stinking politics are something else again.
