Re: Watch what Trump does and not what he says.

You don't know what squeezes Putin and what doesn't, because Putin's interests lie in pleasing a handful of oiligarchs, not in the affairs of the Russian state. So yes, he does care for more than enriching himself and his rich friends. Oiligarchs want oil prices to be high. No, they want to make mo...

Re: Protectionism, does it work?

Protectionism has the sum total effect of transferring wealth from one set of hands into another. Seems to be working for China. Everyone says tarifs don't work yet China grows 7-10% a year for 20 years while the US struggles to get to 3% Not only China. Japan was also protectionist and they grew r...

Re: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

As you see, labour benefits next to nothing from productivity gains, which means that they all go to benefit capital. Even accepting the charts from your dubious sources at face value, employment is much safer than entrepreneurship, so it's not surprising that a lot of the reward for successful ris...

Re: bumbling Donald does it again.

I have read it and responded to a discussion in the PUNDITS OF INTEREST section of this website on this very topic inaugurated by Izzy. It is just a pity that bumbling Donald spoiled his own triumph by (in effect) throwing his intelligence agencies under the bus at that joint press conference - und...

Watch what Trump does and not what he says.

China will want it back. The green, purple and orange coloured areas were taken by Russia in unequal treaties. Interesting, I didn't know the Chinese used to hold Sakhalin. After long centuries of Mongol domination, the Russians fear Asians more than Americans and certainly not the laughable Europe...

Re: David Goldman on Russia and the US

This is only the start. If Goldman is right then Trump has laid the foundations for a much more normal, indeed amicable, relationship between the US and Russia. But we must wait and see how the two leaders build upon those foundations. A lot can still go wrong. Could the Kremlin be wooed away from ...

Re: Iran: the enemy the West made for itself.

Back to the discussion. Yes, what you say is possible - another Indonesia scenario with a bloodbath of suspected communists by the religious faction. Or it could be another Afghanistan scenario. The Soviets might have backed someone ruthless to take over Iran. This might have sparked off a revoluti...
