Drones are Great!

Post by Milo » Tue Jan 10, 2017 1:55 pm

The US military has launched 103 miniature swarming drones from a fighter jet during a test in California.
Three F/A-18 Super Hornets were used to release the Perdix drones last October.
The drones, which have a wingspan of 12in (30cm), operate autonomously and share a distributed brain.
A military analyst said the devices, able to dodge air defence systems, were likely to be used for surveillance.

Yeah, surveillance! That's what I'd say too.

(Hopefully I don't get banned for this.)

Hope the US military doesn't take exception to you posting this. Otherwise your only fear is fear itself

One other thing Surveillance is only the start. Wait until they start flying drones along side of F35s.

I'd say they're better off flying them INSTEAD of F35s

An oft overlooked benefit of drone advances is its potential to democratize weapon technology.

Photos show 'weaponised commercial drones' in Iraq

The improvised weapons consist of a plastic tube attached to a consumer camera drone to carry explosives.

"When spotted, every rifle and man-carried machine gun opens up to tries and shoot them down," he told the BBC.
"Almost half the time, they are successful."

Let's try this modelling exercise. Let's envision a world in a parallel universe somewhere let's say, where I'm right.........

[The Military May Soon Buy the Same Drones You Do/b]

While the military already deploys several types of drone, their biggest limitation in urban environments is that they can’t negotiate building interiors, says Paul Scharre, project director for the 20YY Warfare Initiative at the Center for a New American Security. Large, aircraft-size Predator and Reaper military drones circling overhead cannot spot enemy insurgents or snipers hidden inside buildings or underground tunnel networks. Smaller military drones, such as Ravens and Pumas, are meant to fly outdoors, rather than navigate indoor corridors. Fortunately, a class of drone does exist that flies comfortably down hallways and around rooms. You can find them on the shelf at Target.

“I think there’s a lot of opportunities for the military if they harness commercial technology, modify it for their specific purpose, and field it for urban reconnaissance drones,”

says.https://www.wired.com/2017/01/military- ... ones-home/

You hear a lot about jobs becoming obsolete in the civilian sector but I think the military will be under a lot of pressure too, maybe more, considering how developed countries have almost no stomach for casualties anymore.

Small drone 'shot with Patriot missile'

A Patriot missile - usually priced at about $3m (£2.5m) - was used to shoot down a small quadcopter drone, according to a US general.

However, Gen Perkins suggested deploying large surface-to-air missiles as a defence was probably not economically wise.

"I'm not sure that's a good economic exchange ratio," he told an audience at the Association of the United States Army's Global Force symposium in Alabama.

"In fact, if I'm the enemy, I'm thinking, 'Hey, I'm just gonna get on eBay and buy as many of these $300 quadcopters as I can and expend all the Patriot missiles out there'."

Word is out!

Jobs going obsolete due to automaton is not a trend confined to the private sector.

Bill Clinton once ordered a million dollar missile strike that took out a mule. While I am pretty sure the mule valued its life at more than a million, I am pretty sure the bean counters wouldn't look at it that way.

I suspect we will see cheap attack drones coming out pretty soon.

On second thought there are now hand held EMF weapons out there to take out drones. How long before there are drone held EMF weapons that can take out say tanks, radar, aircraft etc....
