The phrase implies disapproval of both, but not equivalence.Alexis wrote: ↑Wed Jun 07, 2017 3:02 pmI disagree.SteveFoerster wrote: ↑Wed Jun 07, 2017 2:01 pmThe two sides are the Ayatollahs and ISIS. A pox on both of those houses, indeed.
Iran has an illiberal regime, but it's a regular country where non-Shias can live with secure rights if unequal ones, and a country which doesn't subvert the youth of other lands to transform them into traitors and murderers of civilians.
That's quite a few differences with the so-called "caliphate".

Yep! Are you Iran bashers out there aware that Iran is the one country of Islamic heritage in the Middle east that has NOT driven out its Jews?Alexis wrote: ↑Wed Jun 07, 2017 3:02 pmI disagree.SteveFoerster wrote: ↑Wed Jun 07, 2017 2:01 pmThe two sides are the Ayatollahs and ISIS. It is also a country that has continuously declared death to America thus making it a declared enemy of America. So it depends on your attitude to America. If you like America, then you won't like Iran. If you dislike America, then you like Iran.Alexis wrote: ↑Wed Jun 07, 2017 3:02 pmI disagree.SteveFoerster wrote: ↑Wed Jun 07, 2017 2:01 pmThe two sides are the Ayatollahs and ISIS. It also is a country that has continuously called for the destruction of Israel. The same logic applies. Those of you who defend Iran thus hate America and Israel.

Yet it has not taken it out on its own Jewry. Action belies words.
Don't take it too literally cass. What the Islamic Republic says officially is not necessarily meant to be accepted as revealed truth.

Nah, that's going too far. The problem with taking all that "death to [whatever]!" too seriously is that it's an idiomatic expression in Farsi. I mean, during rush hour in Tehran people say "death to traffic!" but that doesn't mean they're all RPGing one another.cassowary wrote: ↑Thu Jun 08, 2017 4:01 amIt is also a country that has continuously declared death to America thus making it a declared enemy of America. Besides, I'm no fan of the Ayatollahs, but Iran isn't the country that has done the most to invade, overthrow, threaten, and generally destabilise Middle Eastern countries. (Hint: Its initials are U.S.A.)

Now come on cassowary! You cannot, surely, be so politically naive as to be unaware that political propaganda is a form of advocacy that utilises lies as readily as it uses the truth in pursuit of its goals.cassowary wrote: ↑Thu Jun 08, 2017 6:18 amThen why say it?
