Belmont Club

Post by lzzrdgrrl » Thu Feb 16, 2017 11:09 am

Residence and meeting house for philosopher, sage and prophet, Richard Fernandez......

This week's offering shows a deep understanding of western civilisation equal to that of Our spengler and a process of argument and flexibility of mind that exceeds even his. There is no question that an axial point for American civilisation has been reached and there is no going back:
The danger of America dividing in the face of an opportunistic enemy should be obvious to the combatants. But the factions of American politics may be too enraged to stop out of fear of a common threat. Noooo! echoes like a howl through the woods. Suicidal factionalism has torn apart famous nations before. Rome's Crisis of the Third Century being the most famous example. "The crisis began with the assassination of Emperor Severus Alexander by his own troops in 235, initiating a 50-year period in which there were at least 26 claimants to the title of Emperor, mostly prominent Roman army generals, who assumed imperial power over all or part of the Empire. The same number of men became accepted by the Roman Senate as emperor during this period and so became legitimate emperors."
....
If Trump is overthrown by the Deep State in a year, he's unlikely to be the last. If neither faction will suffer itself to be governed by the other, whoever succeeds Trump can expect his term to be short. America could have its own period of the 26 presidents. That will be good news for the Barbarians, waiting at the edge of Baltics, in the South China Sea and on Europe's borders, ready to move in.

The Belmont Club is one of the oldest weblogs in existence and is more than a stage setting for an impresario charismo, but is a regular society of thinkers, poseurs and heretics all contributing to the proceedings. Case in point:
Annoy Mouse wrote:There was an election and elections have consequences. Against a vast army of liars and cheats, of fake news and illegal charitable organizations, illegal alien get out the vote schemes, ballots of the dead, and governors encouraging felony voting fraud and felon voting, Trump won. This represents a vote against the deep state and for a constitutional and transparent government. This is yet another vote against communist dictatorship. A progressive is merely a communist without the uniform and the side arm.
Poet emeritus, Walt Erickson wrote:While you’re chanting death to Whitey you demand we bend the knee
And confess our sins and cower but you will not hear our plea
To be left alone to lead our lives without your screaming fits
As you trash our Constitution and you tear our laws to bits
A hard working man is privileged because his skin is white
While elitist college snowflakes burn down buildings as their right
You are lucky little children that so far no Sumter act
Just the steady drip harassment till the boiling becomes fact
It is then that you will find that you have seen your final sun
And your dying eyes discover pulling lanyards is no fun

Look..... this bookcase reveals a hidden wall. The Dark Enlightenment goes mainstream or at least draws some attention from the self-recognised punditry.....'>.......

We look at the life cycle of the reclusive moldbug and the mating habits of the uncommon black swan:
It's like Professor Challenger stumbling on a Lost World filled with menacing and unknown species. What are these creatures? Well a few things can be safely conjectured. The Politico list contains individuals both numerate and literate, with a grounding in history, religion, mathematics, politics and science which at first glance seem to represent a type -- who can say whether good or bad -- but a type nevertheless, peculiar to the early 21st century in contrast to the 19th and mid-20th century public intellectuals that have predominated till now.

Winning the election was one thing. Delivering the promised package is another, especially when the Opposition is willing to burn the boats:
There are other things which once possible, are no longer so. Dana Milbank of the Washington Post reports that attempts to repeal Obamacare would be a violation of international law. "The United Nations has contacted the Trump administration as part of an investigation into whether repealing the Affordable Care Act without an adequate substitute for the millions who would lose health coverage would be a violation of several international conventions that bind the United States. It turns out that the notion that 'health care is a right' is more than just a Democratic talking point."
Sometimes victory isn't winning:
Something is dying and it is dying for all. Trump setbacks don't necessarily mean socialism is winning -- just that things are falling apart as each iteration diminishes the system. Entropy increases in a closed system. A destructive zero sum game has a steadily shrinking payoff. The parliamentary Left, as Daniel Hannan observes, has catastrophically collapsed worldwide. "I wrote a few months back about the collapse of Europe's mainstream Left. France's socialists are in single figures." "This weakness," he adds, "should give conservatives no pleasure."

Sometimes the most important thing is making it back alive:

At any rate, anyone who still believes in an open-border, multiculti world that can be set back upon the rails without more than minor delay must have had his faith shaken to the core. The idea, articulated by Der Spiegel, that if only the establishment could be rid of Trump all would be well, is unrealistic. As Merkel said, the Brexit and Trump have Humpty-Dumptied the status quo ante, cracked it up. It might still patch itself up, but it will no longer be its old self.

Amurrica she is the brokey..... or no? G-20 or G-0?? Epic disaster or opportunity?? R. Fernandez lets David French speak for him when he suggests the Nation is not in civil war, but drifting towards a divorce. (.....and if you follow spengler, you know who will get the kids......'>.......)
But David French, writing in the National Review, is less apocalyptic. "We’re not in a Civil War," he writes "but we are drifting toward divorce." He may well be right but no one quite knows divorce would mean and still less whether it will be a good or bad thing. As in the case in divorces of the marital kind, political separation can lead to disaster or to freedom depending on the outcome. What is less in doubt is that it will produce a degree of voluntary re-segregation that French thinks is already taking place on micro and macro levels.....

This thing in Charlottesville reveals the degeneration, the dehiscence of civil society, the collagen tissue of social order loses integrity and ruptures under the stress. The entry wound, the removal of a statue is but precursor to the exit wound of this thing:

wretchard wrote:Technology allowed us to create separate communities. But it didn't stop there. For a minority on either side the real fun consisted not in fulfilling their own identities but in running the Lives of Others; not in living the life they wanted, but in telling others what to do, what to think, what to feel, what to eat.

Power rivals love as a human impulse. It is perhaps no coincidence that social media was employed from the outset not only to make friends but spy on those that we loathed.

The dark side of hyphens lies not in self-definition, but in defining what we are not. Power has been a powerful force since the world began. History will show that no nation, clime, creed or ideology has been immune to it. If man is an angel capable of wondrous works of technology, he is also a killer angel.
It's insights such as these that makes me suspect Richard Fernandez has a deeper understanding of the human condition than even our spengler.......

Or this could just be American politics as usual: a bunch of histrionics when people don't get their way.

Richard has written a series of blog posts where he asserts the ways and manner the political left is deconstructing itself and by extension, the crisis of meaning in the popular culture:

https://pjmedia.com/richardfernandez/20 ... -bar-door/

A 'taste' from The Spreading Cloud:
Without anybody quite being aware of it identity politics has taken on a life of its own. The campaign against Confederate statues has moved like a pullulating cloud of nanoparticles to the national anthem protest in the NFL. One arm of the cloud has spread to major league baseball. A tendril may soon make the jump to NASCAR racing. There's no escape from the spreading politicization any more, not in the theater, stadium, school or social media. We're trapped in hell.

I don't see it as restricted to one side of the spectrum.
