Re: Catalonian Independence?!

Present Spanish government has no resemblance to Franco. They are democractically elected. I don't know if uts smart or stupid to refuse the referendum. They obviously believe that there is a good chance that Catalonia might go. It might be smart therefore to use force to keep a rich state like Cata...

Re: Can we stop the collapse of democracy?

"First gain all you can, and, secondly, save all you can. Then give all you can." Since giving is contradictory with saving, good, pious people will tend to stop at the second stage... Not John Wesley, the founder of Methodist Church. He gave an excellent example of giving. Perhaps as a result of t...

The British are gentlemen.
The British are anything but "gentle"... And fair-play applies only to their own people, never to outsiders...
Then how come it allowed Scotland and Gibralter a referendum but not Spain?

Re: North Korea

The goal is to stop Fatty Kim from getting nukes/rockets that can hit the US. I agree. So that the US may continue to bully the rest of the world with total impunity. If more countries follow the exemple of North Korea, there won't be any more Vietnams, Iraq invasions, wholesale threatening of "unf...

Re: Can we stop the collapse of democracy?

Cass, will you ever shake off your conviction that the more closely the behavior of nations adhere to your cherished Weslayan values the more prosperous they are bound to become. My pastor likes to quote John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Church. He keeps telling us that Wesley said, "First gain...

Re: Catalonian Independence?!

This is a bit of a comeuppance for Spain. For some time Spain has tried to portray itself as some sort of liberator for its efforts to get Gibraltar. However, the UK has allowed referenda in Gibraltar and Scotland, who voted to stay with the UK, whereas Spain apparently will not even entertain one ...

Re: Can we stop the collapse of democracy?

Post script. I think I can anticipate what you are going to say. What about the fact that before joining the Euro, Greece could devalue. How does my analogy apply to that? The analogy would be that before he got married, he could do things to alleviate the problem of maxing out his credit card that ...

". . . the Aborigines themselves had deficiencies, which hindered their progress." Please be explicit, cass. Jim, For one thing, Australian aborigines drink too much , even for Australians. Indigenous Australians between the ages of 35 and 54 are up to eight times more likely to die than their peer...

Re: Can we stop the collapse of democracy?

The fact that they were helped by joining the Euro does not take away this fact. Helped? Joining the Euro was the final nail in their coffin. Again you dismissively ignored the case I put up. [/quote] The basic cause for the Greek crisis was their welfare state. This caused overspending. They borro...
