Re: Evolution and Mankind's Destiny

It's a good thing Norman Borlaug didn't feel that way. I'm talking about the human species, not about plants and agriculture. Do you agree there is a difference?... No, actually. Your point seems to be that we shouldn't edit human DNA because we cannot know the outcome. But we've edited DNA ...

Re: What if? Alternative history for part of North America

That's interesting -- I realise the U.S. has a lot of economic power, and an interest in stability in the neighbourhood, but even so I don't see why the U.S. would have any say over whether Quebec secedes, nor whether the Western provinces do so, whether in this timeline or the other. As for Quebec ...

Re: Tax plan raises taxes on liberal states and lowers them for the rest.

Steve, I want to thank you for the pains you have taken in your reply. Little for me to disagree with and being there you have the tactical advantage of being more directly "tuned in" to the subject matter under discussion. But allow me to chew the fat a little over this: No, we don't seem to be te...

Re: The Reactionary Left

I wish all the alt-right and "conservatarian" types who have infiltrated the libertarian movement and claim falsely/confusedly to be libertarian would instead honestly self-identify as reactionary. The word "libertarian" is not a synonym for "anti-establishment". We really do have noticeably distinc...

Re: What if? Alternative history for part of North America

I have read a few of Turtledove's alt histories, usually interesting plot lines he concocts, but his writing style is just too repetitive in how he repeats ad nauseum details and recaps of his characters as he jumps around. His books could be edited to about 25% of their page count... I agree, and ...

Re: What if? Alternative history for part of North America

You may appreciate an alternate history novel called The Two Georges, by Harry Turtledove and Richard Dreyfuss, set in a North America where the colonies reconciled with the government of George III rather seeking independence. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Two_Georges Thanks for the tip off St...

Re: Trump Support Does not get you Moore

So despite Trump's support, Moore loses in Alabama. Moore, in true Trumpian fashion, has petulantly refused to concede. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/world/roy-moore-doug-jones-alabama-senate-race-democrats-republicans/article37311424/ Where's your God now Moore? Trump and the RNC did not su...

Re: Tax plan raises taxes on liberal states and lowers them for the rest.

The spending needs of different states, cities, counties and regions are very unequal as is their means to raise revenue. SALT, I would suggest, has merely been an acknowledgement at your Federal level of government that this is so and an attempt to give the states etc with the greater needs an eve...
